Becoming a good leader requires you to have various technical skills and experiences. To lead team members under your supervision, you must know how to deal with different tasks and situations that you might encounter. Especially if you are in an engineering team, competencies in technical skills are one of the most essential things you must have. However, many junior workers and companies forget the importance of the fact that senior workers or team leaders must have adequate interpersonal skills such as teamwork, communication and leadership. In terms of that, qualities of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) are the factors related to the interpersonal skills that workers need to obtain and improve to be good leaders. In this blog, 3 of the qualities of EQ will be introduced including motivation, empathy, and relationship management.

Firstly, motivating followers, employees, and entire organizations come from being a great leader. Engaging employees and recognizing their efforts go a long way in creating motivation. Being an excellent leader motivates employees in and of itself. Employee engagement is higher when they feel their manager is doing a great job.

Also, great leaders understand that compassion and the ability to connect with others are key to building trust within a team. Understanding the needs and thoughts of their team members builds empathy. This is valuable insight to leaders and helps in communicating with employees and building relationships.

Furthermore, relationship management refers to your ability to influence, coach, and mentor others, and resolve conflict effectively. Some prefer to avoid conflict, but it is important to properly address issues as they arise. Research shows that every unaddressed conflict can waste about eight hours of company time in gossip and other unproductive activities, putting a drain on resources and morale.
